Taiwan Leader Visits Eswatini to Strengthen Remaining African Diplomatic Ties

(MENAFN) Lai Ching-te visited key development sites in Eswatini on Sunday, as Taiwan seeks to reinforce its diplomatic relationship with one of its few remaining partners in Africa amid ongoing international diplomatic pressure.

As stated by reports, Lai toured major infrastructure projects including the Ezulwini Palazzo convention center, which he described as part of a forward-looking development model intended to attract investment and integrate local industries into global supply chains.

He said the facility could help draw Taiwanese businesses to invest in the country while also supporting local workforce development and economic integration.

According to general accounts, he also visited the Royal Science and Technology Park, where he was briefed on projects supported with Taiwanese financial assistance, including the development of a strategic oil storage facility aimed at improving energy security.

Lai described the project as an important milestone in long-standing cooperation between the two sides, which have maintained formal relations since 1968.

During a courtesy visit to the royal family, he met with Queen Mother Indlovukazi Ntombi Tfwala, where both sides reportedly exchanged gifts and expressed appreciation for continued cooperation and development support.

As stated by reports, Lai also made remarks emphasizing Taiwan’s international role and sovereignty, arguing that the island should not be restricted from participating in global affairs, while expressing appreciation for Eswatini’s continued diplomatic support.

He also criticized external pressure on Taiwan, stating that it should be able to engage freely with the international community and contribute to global development efforts.
